POLL: 2009-2010 Team Previews

July 24, 2009 by Evil E

It’s time for some team previews, but this year, you have to pick which teams you want to see.

Last August, I attempted to write Team Previews for all 30 teams in a matter of just 30 days. It took a little longer than expected due to a mid-month vacation, but I believe those ’08-09 Team Previews turned out be very useful for the people reading them.

Even if one did not purchase the RotoEvil Draft Guide last season, they could have found plenty of great players to target by simply following my free “DON’T SLEEP ON” analysis. In that section, I recommended one player per team to pay close attention to. Some of the players mentioned last year include: Nene, Troy Murphy, Jeff Green, Mario Chalmers, and Tony Parker. Despite hyping them up in August & September, those 5 players fell much further than they should have on draft day, and as a result, they all played pivotal roles for winning fantasy hoops teams.

In fact, the Team Previews were so useful last year that several customers requested that next season, I keep them for Draft Guide users only. I have decided to oblige, but it wouldn’t feel right if I didn’t post some of them for FREE.

So this August, I’m going to post free Team Previews for the 5 teams that you most want to read about. I will save the other 25 for my Draft Guide customers only. This season, the Team Previews will be even juicier, featuring more in-depth analysis to go along with detailed stats and suggestions on which players to target and avoid. So pick your fav 5, and let me know why those teams are at the top of your list.

*The poll ends on July 31st, so get your votes in ASAP!

  1. Kicking Rocks says:

    Chicago
    Oklahoma
    Minnesota
    Phoenix
    Washington

    These are my trouble spots.

  2. Evil E says:

Washington takes the early lead. Great choice. They really upgraded over the summer, and now they have 2 legit players at every position.

  3. Jeeves says:

The Wiz are sick. They are definitely next years sleeper!

  4. Jonny says:

that’s funny why is everyone (myself included) interested in G-State? Is it because they have two many swingmen and some very interesting young ballers coming up? hmmm.

  5. Jeeves says:

The interest in GS might be in the combination of Curry and Randolph!

  6. Evil E says:

OK, so right now it’s the Warriors, Knicks, Blazers, Thunder, and Wiz.

T-Wolves, Rockets, and Pistons also have legit shots at getting picked. Meanwhile, no love for the Hawks or Hornets.

60 voters so far. If there are more than 100 by the end of July, I’ll end the poll early.

  7. IllegalD says:

I am very interested in GS too but I didn’t want that info out free to the public so I didn’t vote for them.

  8. Evil E says:

Alright, 94 voters have already responded, so the poll will now end on July 31st. If you still haven’t voted, make sure you do so by Friday night.

Thunder, Warriors, and Wiz look like locks, but the 4th and 5th spots are still up for grabs.

IllegalD makes an interesting point tho. If you’re planning on purchasing the Draft Guide, then maybe you shouldn’t vote for the teams that you really want to read about…

  9. Not Evil says:

    detroit, houston, sac, minn, phoenix

    -reason:

  10. Evil E says:

OK, over 600 total votes have been made, and the poll is now officially closed!

The winning teams are the Wizards, Thunder, Warriors, Cavs, and Blazers.

The Knicks, T-Wolves, Raptors, and Clippers were the runners-up.

Your 1st FREE Team Preview will be up by the end of next week. Thanks for voting everyone.

  11. Vivek says:

Why the F__K would anyone want Cleveland??? That team is horrible for fantasy purposes other than Queen James. Unless someone played strategy and kept picking them over and over, so no one gets any relative information for FREE. :)

    • d2bnz says:

I personally had nought to do with it , but I do find Vivek’s bleating amusing …….four teams of interest is better than none.

      • Evil E says:

I think Cleveland is one of the more intriguing teams this year.

Not because they have several guys who will be good value picks for fantasy purposes, but because they were one of the top contenders last season and they did a fine job of addressing their weaknesses over the summer.

For example, Jamario Moon might not get enough minutes to make a major fantasy impact, but his addition is HUGE for the Cavs.

        • BSB says:

Sure Cleveland is a great team, anyone asking for fantasy info on the team should not play fantasy sports!

          • Kicking Rocks says:

            BSB,

Every team in the league needs a team preview. Moreso the teams who have acquired new players expected to play many minutes. As a matter of fact the Cavs will have one of the most complicated variable lineups in the NBA. Please try to crank out their prosposed starting lineup. Including how their 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th man will be used. The cavs are deep. Most teams will stick to 8 or less.

Give us your easy guide to the Cavs.

            mau williams
            delonte west
            Anthony Parker
            Boobie Gibson
            Wally
            Jamario Moon
            Joe Smith…if he returns.
            Anderson Varajao
            Lebron James
            Big Z
            Shaq

Please explain the muddy issue of shooting guard and point guard. Once you are done. Im really interested on your thoughts of the Frontline. What combination will be the best vs traditional bigs vs jumpshooting bigs vs transitional bigs?

Who will be the effective shooting guard? Delonte West or Anthony Parker? Who is the better defender? Who will start? Who is the best defenisive guard on the team.

Please explain Jamario Moons impact on the starting 5 and in game substitutions. Who plays on the front line and when? Shaq, Joe Smith, Big Z, Lebron James, Jamarion Moon and Varajao.

After all that…should you step up to the challenge. Dissect the possible lineups the Cavs will use to start games and end games. Which lineup will be the most effective at what instances. Lineups 1,2,3,4 and 5 would be nice.

I don’t think you understand what you are saying. The cavs are very intriguing.

          • BSB says:

Sure I dont mind giving u a quick team preview, so you can enjoy it and draft a bunch of fantasy bums, unless you are kicking around in a very very very DEEP league (in which case you would be doing your own research and would not need to read this)

PG Mo Williams, expect the same numbers as last year, with Shaq in town there will be more open threes, so you can bump him up to about 2.5 per game, however, less shots means that he will prob drop down to 15 ppgs…due to Shaq alley oop presence give him about .9 assists to round it to 5, overall, his value will increase very slightly and should be drafted as a 2nd PG…I would target in 5th round if you want value, however, if point guards run thin, not a horrible reach in later part of the 4th
SG – West will see more pt in the reg season due to the youth factor, but considering that he is not an ironman, he will break down a couple of times and Parker will be worth owning for 2 10 game stretches this season, other than that, yawn…If must, draft west in the 9th round, ignore Parker
SF – Lebron James – Draft number 1 or 2, lucky you
PF – Varejao, does not grab enough rebounds, does not block enough to help at PF or C positions, look elsewhere, Darko will come at same price but will block a few shots…IGNORE
C – Shaq will start, Z will back him up due to a smaller ego. This is great for the cavs as they can play Big Z at the 4 if they decide to go big. Look for same scoring numbers from both giants, but knock them both down on your cheat sheets if you are loking for rebounding, as they will both lose some. Don’t be affraid to pair Shaq with Dwight Howard, if you can get him in the 10th round, but don’t lose sleep if you miss, as he will certainly miss a couple of dozen games to rest his body for the playoffs. Big Z was already declining due to the minute crunch, so therefore draft as 4th center if you watch alot of Cavs games and wanna cheer someone on….

Moon – his impact will be seen as a in game contributor, not as a fantasy player, DO NOT DRAFT

Joe Smith – not going back…
Wally – if goes back will play 17 games and avg 3 minutes per game…

Sleeper – LEbron James….yea right, none, but if you must choose one, its Daniel Gibson, haha, kidding, there are no sleepers, but do watch Hickson if he gets moved at the deadline

Avoid – PArker, Moon, Big Z, Varejao

Ok, that took about 5 minutes of my time, but just wanted to help you out – no spell check necessary for a msg board, so please excuse grammar and spelling errors

  12. hfjgfhj says:

info on the cavs will prob b more useful than info on the knicks becuase we dont need evil e to tell us everyone on the kincks roster is a gonna b fantasy relevant

  13. Kicking Rocks says:

I picked Washington, Minnesota, Thunder, Chicago and Phx.

Washington will a fantasy gold mine at every position. Not mentioning the young guns.

Minnesota is basically new at every position.

    Thunder Young Guns.

Phoenix will be simple to project. Still interesting because of their style.

    Chicago. Who really knows….

  14. Vivek says:

What i’m saying is Cleveland will not decide who wins NBA Fantasy Leagues across the world. They have no IMPACT players other than the Queen. They have no one who you can draft in rounds 2 through 12 other than mo williams who will go probably round 7 or 8. Delonte and Parker cancel each other out too. Those moves they made are horrible. If Cavs, Magic, and Celtics all are healthly, Boston and Orlando are still the teams to beat in the east. Cleveland didn’t address it’s weaknesses. They still don’t have anyone that can guard Dwight, Rashard, Vince, KG, and Pierce.

What do you want to know from a team full of reserves???

  15. d2bnz says:

“don’t be afraid to pair Shaq with Dwight Howard ”

We can assume that with this advice BSB will be punting FT%

  16. Kicking Rocks says:

    BSB,

Nice effort. Some good thoughts. Close but no Cigar. I particularly like where you mention Big Z as the 4. I believe he will be happy at the 4 since he is a good jumpshooter. But he will get burned defensively for the most part.

You fail to see the bright side of specialist players. Good thing most drafts go to round 14 or 15. Plus the waiver wire is a key to maintaining your squad.

Anthony Parker will make a fantasy impact as a 3 point specialist primarily. Especially in leagues where 3 point% is counted. He has hovered at 40% last 3 seasons.

Varajao will be picked up by owners looking for rebounds with few turnovers. Even with Big Z and Shaq taking most of the rebounds. Varajao will maintain his career avg of 7. 20-28 rebounds weekly. Udonis haslem averaged 8-10 rebounds playing opposite of shaq. Haslem was a nobody. But he was on many teams anchoring their rebounds and fg%.

Big Z will get plenty of minutes to score, rebound and blk shots. Yes I said the non jumping ilgauskus will sneak more than a few blocks every week.

I have more to say….but will leave it at that.

There is more to fantasy basketball than what is framed by your conceited small minded perspective.

    • BSB says:

If you care to know, you can get yourself Varejao and Big Z and I’ll go with young guys who can contribte alot more, such as Randolph, Hawes, Jason Thompson, Kevin Love etc… Should be able to get those guys in later rounds and guarantee yourself your 12 and 6, however, with upside. The league is won by taking upside in the last 5 rounds, not guys who will put up 12 and 6 with 1 block, no assists, steals, and don’t shoot enough to impact your percentage….that is why god created waivers

If those guys are gone, then you are playing in a good league and either way, Varejao and Big Z will not win you that league either, as you will need 1-2 phenomenal sleeper picks to pan out, plus 2 of your higher picks to have career years!

However, I am sure you are very successful at fantasy spors due to your nerd like attitude and due to 127 pick ups a week.

      • Kicking Rocks says:

        BSB,

How dare you! Calling me, Kicking Rocks, “Nerd-like”. I will the first person to let you know. I am Full Blown Nerd! CAPITAL N_E_R_D! 1000!% No ifs and or likes about it. Get it straight. Pocket protectors and Balls to the wall!!!

Excuse me…as I have an internet date with my ugly ponytailed nerd girlfriend. She likes to play world of warcraft before the sun goes down while our desks sit face to face so we can play footsies.

FYI the devil  invented weekly waiver restrictions so god knows who’s the boss.

High five! Down low. To slow!!!!

  17. Evil E says:

Anyone else care to add their own Cleveland preview? Maybe I can combine all of yours so I don’t have to do it myself. :P

1st Team Preview drops in less than 24 hours!!!

  18. Evil E says:

OK, so all 5 of the FREE previews have now been posted. If you enjoyed them, there’s a lot more where that came from, but you’ll have to purchase the Draft Guide in order to gain access.

Looking back, I’m glad that New York and Minnesota didn’t win, because their situations are still unsettled. Personally I voted for Toronto, because I’m intrigued by all of the changes that Bryan Colangelo has made over the past few years. But since they didn’t win, I guess you’ll have to wait to read about the Raptors…

However, I HAVE decided to share a little more content for FREE over the next few weeks. I’m not sure what I’ll reveal exactly, but I suggest you stay tuned if you’re hungry for more…
